Have you heard OF Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH)?
Do you have PCOS? Have you heard or been tested for Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH)?
Let me clarify what it is!
In the 1980s it was first discovered that the ovaries make this hormone. AMH regulates different stages of ovarian follicle development - which is necessary for eventual release of an egg during ovulation.
What has become evident as well is that the AMH blood test result can help provide information on the health of the ovaries and even predict medical conditions such as PCOS.
More specifically - AMH levels are 2-4x higher in women with polycystic ovary syndrome and it is also likely that AMH is also involved in the development of PCOS.
Blood AMH levels are first detectable at 36 weeks of gestation through to menopause - so the levels do decrease with age but don’t vary significantly during menstrual cycles
AMH expression is up-regulated by the high levels of LH, androgens, and androgen receptors (AR). Estradiol (E2) no longer has an effect because of an increase of the ESR1/ESR2 (estrogen receptors) ratio
