I’m bad at Meditating

Is your vision of a ‘good’ meditation session one in which a person is cross-legged at dawn or dusk, eyes-closed, a light fog surrounding, the sound of a rolling creek and fading gong in the background, with uninterrupted focus for the duration of the meditation?

Yeah - that would be amazing.

Also - envisioning this as a successful meditation already sets you up for thinking you are ‘failing’ when this unrealistic scenario does not manifest.

The only bad meditation is the one that you do not try. Cliche, but true.

Recommendations for trying out meditation:

  1. Start with 5 minutes

  2. Let other people know you need to be alone for 10 minutes (prevents those who stick to hard time frames from potentially interrupting your session prematurely)

  3. Expect that you will come in and out of focus during the session - that is completely normal

  4. After the first session, slowly open your eyes and ask yourself how you feel. Congratulate yourself for taking the time and make a commitment to do it again another time that week.

Meditation offers significant health benefits when it comes to stress reduction, blood pressure control, sleep quality, digestion, and blood sugar readings.

Some of my favorite apps to try out: TM Community, Petite Bambou, Calm, Headspace, Ten Percent Happier, and the Peloton App.

Try them each out to find which one jives best with you!
